Section 3: Assessing Your Beneficial Electrification Opportunity

Transportation Electrification Calculator

This self-assessment calculator for transportation electrification is designed to illustrate the potential opportunities in pursuing a beneficial electrification program in your area.

Before you begin, it will be useful to gather local data, such as:

  • Liquid fuel costs: gasoline & diesel ($/gallon)

  • Electric fuel cost: retail electricity rate ($/kWh)

  • Meter count in your service territory

  • Passenger car: ICE 25-28mpg EV 0.25-0.32 kWh/mile (Chevy Bolt, Tesla Model 3 etc.)

    Crossover SUV: ICE 21-24mpg EV 0.27-0.40 kWh/ mile (Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E etc.)

    4X4 Pickup truck : ICE 14-16 mpg EV 0.48-0.60 kWh/ mile (Ford F150 Lightning, Rivian R1T etc.)

    ICE = Internal combustion engine
    EV = Electric vehicle

  • School Bus: ICE 6 mpg EV 1.7 kWh/mile

    Police Crossover SUV: ICE 7 mpg (idling) EV 0.5 kWh/mile (hard driving: Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E etc.)

    Garbage Truck: ICE 2.5 mpg EV 1.8 kWh/mile

    4X4 Pickup Truck: ICE 14-16 mpg EV 0.48-0.60 kWh/mile (Ford F150 Lightning, Rivian R1T etc.)

    4x4 Pickup when towing: ICE 7-9 mpg EV 0.9-1.2 kWh/mile

    Transit Bus: ICE 2.5 mpg EV 1.9 kWh/mile

    Class 4-6 Box Van: ICE 6 mpg EV 0.8 kWh/mile

    Class 8 Semi: ICE 5 mpg EV 1.9 kWh/mile

    Shuttles & Paratransit: ICE 6.5 mpg EV 0.9 kWh/mile
